Application of UVM-2 Ultrasonoscope to Researching Elastic Waves of Frozen Soil

  • Ultrasonoscope of UVM-2 type from Japan is a apparatus to measuring ultrasonic velocitiy in solids or liquids. The UVM-2 is able to measuring transmitable time of sonic velocities by sing around method. The sonic velocity and the elastic modulus of material can be measured speedy and truly to eliminating the influence of more reflection in sample by the fixation time of sonic around process. Resultingly, elastic wave velocities transmitable in engineering medium are correlated nearly with density, soil character and elastic modulus, therefore, the measuring of elastic wave velocities feature is an important method to deducing the elastic modulus and imaging form characteristic of rock body. UVM-2 can be used to determine dynamics elastic modulus of frozen thaw rock and soil in unbroken state in home and field, specialy the elastic wave velocity variation of frozen soil in different minus temperatures, water contents and stresses. and the measuring methods on elastic wave velocities of frozen soil has been introduced using UVM-2. And the lengthwise wave velocity/transverse wave of frozen Lanzhou loess were measured carefully in different minus temperatures(-1℃~-20℃) by using the instrument and the ultrasonic transducers made up by ourselves. The apply test results have showed that the measuring values by the instrument is all good reduplication and the values is accurate.
