Determination of Hydrogen Sulfide in Main Stream Smoke of Cigarette by Ion Chromatography

A method has been developed for the determination of hydrogen sulfide in the main stream smoke of cigarette by ion chromatography with the pulsed amperametric detection.The particulate matter in the main stream smoke of cigarette was trapped on a cambridge filter pad, and then was extracted with a mixed solution of 0.5% V/V ethylenediamine-50 mmol/L sodium hydroxide-250 mmol/L sodium acetate.The vapor phase matter was absorbed by the absorption liquid of 0.5% V/V ethylenediamine-50 mmol/L sodium hydroxide-250 mmol/L sodium acetate.The combined extration liquid of the particulate matter and the absorption liquid of the vapor phase matter was separated on an ion chromatographic column with a mixture solution of 1.5 mol/L sodium hydroxide-1 mol/L sodium acetate-2% V/V ethylenediamine as the eluant. Then hydrogen sulfide was determined by an ampere detector with a -100 mv detection potential.Twelve cigarette samples were determined,and the results showed that the linearity range, detection limit, limit of quantitation and recovery were 0.1~5.0 μg/mL,1.03 μg/mL,3.41 μg/mL and 102.3%~107.2%, respectively.And the relative standard deviation was less than 5%.This method is of simple pretreatment,higher accuracy,which can be used for the determination of the content of hydrogen sulfide in the main stream smoke of cigarette.
